Dr. Edward Hoffman briefly discusses his approach and strategies for developing leaders.
Dr. Edward Hoffman serves as the Director of the NASA Academy for Program/Project and Engineering Leadership (APPEL). In this role he is responsible for the development of program/project leaders and engineers within NASA.
In a project-based organization like NASA, performance takes place in a team setting. After the highly publicized failure of two Mars missions in the late 1990s, NASA began providing direct support to project teams through its Academy of Program/Project & Engineering Leadership. A decade later, the Academy has supported hundreds of project and engineering teams across the agency.
The Academy’s approach to direct team support includes:
• Online team performance assessments;
• Team building and team effectiveness workshops;
• Technical life cycle support; and
• Intensive coaching, mentoring, and consulting with expert practitioners.
Data collected from these interventions make clear that the optimal performance and learning come together at the team level.
